What you need to know about hiking around Malibu

• Many of these trails around Malibu are heavily exposed to the hot sun and you should take sun protection seriously. Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, which are all hiking essentials that you should pack in your daypack.
• Watch out for poison oak on some of the trails and try to avoid it as much as possible. It can especially be a threat to people who are allergic to it. 
• Trails around Malibu don’t require any sort of hiking permit but some have paid parking fees at the trailheads.
• Be aware that some of these trails are also shared with mountain bikers which means you should remain alert for riders coming past.
• Venomous snakes such as rattlesnakes can be spotted on some of these trails, especially in hot weather. Watch the trail ahead carefully and be aware where you’re stepping.
• These trails are all easily accessible from Malibu and even Santa Monica, meaning there’s no need for camping on the trails. However, you can camp in Malibu Creek State Park and Sycamore Canyon Campground which have designated sites that can be booked in advance if you want to stay near some day hikes. 

Best hikes near Malibu

Corral Canyon Loop

• Start/finish: Sara Wan Trailhead (34.033778, -118.734726)
• Distance: 2.5-mile loop
• Elevation gain: 525-ft
• Difficulty: Easy

The Corral Canyon Loop trail is one of the most accessible hikes in Malibu. The trailhead is just on the Pacific Coast Highway, opposite Corral Beach. 

Although the loop can be done in any direction, it’s best to take the left trail first which offers better ocean views as you climb higher. At the far end of the loop, you’ll come to the highest point with views that stretch along the entire Californian coastline. Then you can continue down through the canyon back to the start of the hike. 

It generally takes just an hour or so to complete but expect a decent elevation gain so it’s still a good workout. The trail is well worn but it can have overgrown bushes, so it’s recommended to wear long pants on this hike. 

Tuna Canyon

• Start/finish: Tuna Canyon Trailhead (34.059776, -118.616996)
• Distance: 5-miles round trip
• Elevation gain: 650-ft
• Difficulty: Easy

Tuna Canyon is a 1250-acre park area between Topanga and Malibu. It’s popular with families with relatively flat and undulating trails. From the main trailhead you can access two main viewpoints, one facing east and one facing west. You can easily combine both together in this five-mile hike.

Head left at the first intersection along Big Rock Motorway, which will take you out to the first viewpoint and highest point in the area. Then, you’ll need to double back to the same intersection and continue straight to Big Rock Lateral, the other viewpoint in the park. From here, you can head back the same way to the car park to complete the round trip.

There are incredible ocean views from both viewpoints, and some say it’s one of the most underrated areas for hiking in Malibu.

Charmlee Wilderness Park

Charmlee Wilderness Park is a 532-acre scenic park area in Western Malibu. The park has a number of picnic areas, hiking trails and a nature center. There are around eight miles worth of trails that you can create your own hike from although the most popular tends to be the Ocean Overlook. There is a $4 parking fee for day use.

Ocean Overlook Loop Trail

This ocean view loop trail is the most popular hike in the Charmlee Wilderness Park. It is a fairly easy undulating trail that offers incredible views across the ocean. The loop skirts around the outer parts of the park and reaches the Ocean Overlook lookout around halfway. 

The park has been devastated in wildfires previously and the trail can be closed for extended lengths of time, so you should check the park status before heading out.

Escondido Falls

• Start/finish: Winding Way Road (34.031689, -118.772657)
• Distance: 3.8 miles return
• Elevation gain: 620-ft
• Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

This is one of the most popular hiking trails around Malibu. The hike begins off Winding Way Road along a well-defined path. The trail is known as Escondido Canyon Trail and it crosses over creeks as it takes you to one of the biggest waterfalls in Southern California. 

The falls are a two-tiered 150-foot cascade of water running down limestone rock. If it’s a hot day then you can cool off at the small pool of water at the bottom of the falls. 

The trail is not very difficult, but you must be prepared for some rock hopping over streams. There is also a steep climb to get up to the Upper Escondido Falls and the main viewing area.  

Solstice Canyon

• Start/finish: Solstice Canyon Hiking Trail Parking Area (34.037917, -118.747553)
• Distance: 3.2 miles loop
• Elevation gain: 800-ft
• Difficulty: Moderate

The Solstice Canyon is a very popular place for a day hike. The trails are well worn and frequently trafficked passing by some interesting abandoned ruins. This moderate 3-mile loop first follows the gentle Solstice Canyon Trail, which is a shaded service road. You’ll pass the Keller House, an abandoned hunting cabin made of stone and then further to the Tropical Terrace Ruins, a Polynesian-style home that was destroyed by fire in 1982. 

Just past the ruined house, you’ll find the small but constantly flowing waterfall and natural pools. It’s the perfect spot to have a break and cool off before taking the Rising Sun Trail back to the car park. 

It’s a bit of a climb initially, but the Rising Sun Trail offers incredible views of the ocean through the canyon walls as you head back. 

Big Sycamore Canyon Loop

• Start/finish: Sycamore Canyon Trailhead (34.080702, -119.012658)
• Distance: 10.2 miles loop
• Elevation gain: 1210-ft
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Dogs: Allowed on leash

Sycamore Canyon is inside the Point Mugu State Park which is 14 miles west of Malibu. There are a couple of trails that you can follow to explore the canyon, but the Big Sycamore Canyon Loop is a popular, moderate grade loop that is an excellent option. 

You can begin the hike from the campground by taking the scenic trail or from the official trailhead which is just further up the road a little. Either way, both trails meet up and continue around the loop clockwise for a gradual hill climb with incredible ocean views. 

As you reach the highest point of the hike around halfway, it’s all downhill and flat from there through the canyon back to the start point.

The trail is also popular for mountain biking so be aware on the trails for oncoming bikes. The cost of parking for day use is $12 and the gates to the park are open from 8 am until 9 pm.

Backbone Trail Loop

• Distance: 7.5-mile loop

Technically, the entire Backbone Trail runs for 67 miles across the length of the Santa Monica Mountains in southern California. However, it’s possible to do this loop trail as a day hike that tackles just a section of it. 

From the Calabasas Peak Trailhead on Stunt Road, you can follow this 7.5-mile loop that begins with a steep scramble for the first couple of miles. After this, it is much more gradual and downhill. The trail crosses over Stunt Road a few times as you eventually circle back to your starting point. 

The views of the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains are incredible from the exposed trail for much of the hike. It’s recommended that you hike the loop clockwise for a much more comfortable hike. 

Temescal Canyon Trail

This moderately challenging hike is a great adventure in the hills of Pacific Palisades in west LA. The short trail starts in Temescal Gateway Park, so it’s easily accessible from the city.

The canyon trail takes in some incredible scenery, including views of the canyon and the ocean down to the coast. At the furthest point of the walk you’ll come to Temescal Canyon Falls, which is a shady spot to cool off in the summer.

As you come back down to the road, there are numerous viewpoints and the chance to extend the walk to Skull Rock as well.

Los Leones Trail

This hike in the Topanga State Park is one of the best in the LA area. The Los Liones trailhead is located just back from Castle Rock Beach and heads up into the nature park in the hills. While you can shorten this if you prefer, we recommend doing the complete 7.3 mile out and back to Parker Mesa Overlook to get the most out of it.

The first part of the hike on the Los Leones Trail is relatively gentle as it climbs through a canyon. It then meets another trail at the Paseo Miramar Viewpoint before you must turn left and take the challenging ascent up to the highest point at Parker Mesa Overlook.

This viewpoint is one of the finest in the entire Malibu area. It can be busy because non-hikers can more easily reach it from a fire road. But it’s the perfect reward for the long and challenging climb. You can then return the same way.

Malibu Creek State Park

Malibu Creek State Park is a large park area covering over 8000 protected acres in the Santa Monica Mountains. There are miles upon miles of hiking trails with beautiful views and rock pool swimming holes to enjoy. 

There are also a number of restored movie sets in the area used in M*A*S*H* and Planet of the Apes that you can reach on foot. 

The park entrance is 6.8 miles off the Pacific Coast Highway along Malibu Canyon Road. For day hikers, the park gates are open from 8 am to 10 pm with parking fees around $12 a day. Dogs are allowed in campgrounds and paved roads but not on trails.

Mesa Peak

This peak provides an incredible panoramic view of the coastline of Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains. The trail begins at the Backbone Trailhead car park in the Malibu Creek State Park. 

Following the trail known as the Mesa Peak Motorway, which is a wide dirt road you’ll slowly gain 1390 feet in elevation to the ridgeline. The views are incredible in all directions for most of the hike, so you’ll know that the steep climb is worthwhile. 

Once you reach a major trail intersection, you need to continue left on Puerco Motorway that heads slightly down to the summit of Mesa Peak. The incredible panoramic views of the coast are beautiful. You can then return the same way.

Zuma Canyon Loop Trail

The Zuma Canyon Loop trail is a relatively popular hiking trail in Malibu, although the 10.8-mile loop is definitely a challenging yet rewarding day out. The trailhead is easily accessed to the west of Malibu and just up from Zuma Beach at the end of Busch Drive.

The route climbs steadily up Zuma Ridge and then up and down through Zuma Canyon. There are incredible ocean views and mountain ridgelines visible for much of the way. The loop is well signposted so you can easily navigate the intersections with other trails in the area.

The trail is well worn but occasionally a little overgrown and you should watch for snakes on a hot day. The loop can be done in any direction but is most commonly recommended in a clockwise direction.

The most well-known park area in Los Angeles, Griffith Park covers over 4200 acres of parkland in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain Range. It’s one of the largest urban wilderness areas in the US and is home to some of the most popular Los Angeles hikes. It’s just a 10-minute drive north of Downtown LA, making it very easy to reach from the city.

This fairly easy walk is one of the most well-known in the Los Angeles area. It takes you along the iconic observatory where you can enjoy views of the Hollywood sign and LA Basin. 

It’s slightly uphill to begin with and then downhill on the way back, but it’s not overly difficult and there are plenty of chances to stop and take in the view along the way.

Bronson Caves

The Bronson Caves are a unique landscape of rock formations that have been used in countless Hollywood films. You can park at the picnic area and just walk to the cave easily enough.

A quieter trail in Griffith Park, Brush Canyon Trail is 2 miles long and takes you through Mount Hollywood and past an old quarry. It offers great views of the city and the iconic Hollywood sign. Just after 0.75 miles, you’ll crossover the popular Mulholland Trail and you can turn right until you reach Mount Hollywood Drive. Return the same way.

Glendale Peak Trail

This manageable hike up to Glendale Peak is located in Griffith Park. It begins at the same trailhead as the longer Mount Hollywood hike but is a far less trafficked trail leading up to a stunning view at 1190-feet high. 

The hike uses the Riverside Trail which takes a gradual course along the ridge. You’ll be able to see nice views of the Griffith Observatory and down towards the city. You need to keep an eye out for the short but rugged trail to the peak for panoramic views.

Runyon Canyon Park Trail

This popular park in the Hollywood Hills is a great place to head for incredible city views and some potential celebrity spotting. It can be very busy, but it’s become a must do while in Los Angeles. 

The Runyon Canyon loop trail is quite easy but it still provides a worthwhile view of the Hollywood Sign from the top of the loop trail which is known as Cloud’s Rest. It should take you just over an hour, depending on how many times you stop for photos.

Vasquez Rocks Trail

Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is an incredible desert landscape with interesting rock formations. Within just a short drive north from Los Angeles past Santa Clarita, it makes for a really unique place to go hiking. 

While you can make your own walk here, there is a popular 3.7 mile loop which uses part of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and then connects with Foot Trail to form a nice and relatively easy hike. 

You might recognize some of the rocky landscape from Hollywood films and TV shows like Star Trek and Mission Impossible.

Elysian Park West Loop Trail

As one of the closest hiking trails to Downtown Los Angeles, Elysian Park is a great place to head for a morning stroll or trail run. The park is one of the largest in the city but it’s very underrated, so you’ll likely see few others here.

The loop trail is not overly difficult and should only take around an hour for most people. However, the park is quite elevated, giving you superb views over the valley and Downtown area when the sky is clear.

Switzer Falls Trail

This is the most popular Los Angeles waterfall hike. The rugged trail takes you into a gorge of the San Gabriel Mountains all the way to a 50-foot waterfall. The falls can be reached by the Gabrielino Trail which starts off as being relatively flat.

After about a mile, it climbs up the side of the canyon before you have to stay left at the junction and continue along Bear Canyon. This trail then descends to the creek before heading upstream where you’ll find small pools to enjoy cooling off in before you need to head back.

Cahuenga Peak via Wisdom Tree Trail

Cahuenga Peak hike is a short but challenging workout just outside of Griffith Park. It’s a steep out and back trail from the end of Wonder View Drive, first to Wisdom Tree and then onto Cahuenga Peak which offers incredible views. 

Wisdom Tree is a pine tree sitting on Burbank Peak which is a popular spot for panoramic city views. However, it’s worth continuing to Cahuenga Peak for an even higher view and longer walk.

Bridge to Nowhere

For something fun and different around Los Angeles, the hike to the Bridge to Nowhere is an incredible opportunity to scramble amongst the San Gabriel Mountains. The trail follows the San Gabriel River through a gorge for 5 miles to the historic bridge which was built in 1936 and then abandoned after flooding destroyed the connecting roads.

The hike is pretty fun, especially because you have to cross the stream multiple times along the way. This makes it perfect as a summer hike, but make sure you bring shoes you don’t mind getting wet as you have to wade through water.

Betty B. Dearing Mountain Trail

A popular trail in the San Fernando Valley, the Betty B Dearing Trail gives you the opportunity to see beautiful views in Fryman Canyon. While the trail begins quite steeply, you’ll be relieved to know that it levels out and is relatively moderate for most of the hike.

It heads west from the trailhead and then down through Coldwater Canyon Park before coming out at Iredell Street. From there, you’ll have to walk back to the parking lot along the quiet residential street. This trail is dog friendly too, which makes it a nice option if you are traveling with your pet.

Mandeville Canyon Trail

For something a little more off the beaten track, Mandeville Canyon is a north-south running canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains. This is a really underrated hike which takes you from the bottom of the canyon up to San Vicente Mountain at 1960 feet. 

The ridgelines on either side of the canyon have trails so you can do a nice loop, up one ridge and down the other. It’s generally recommended to ascend via the Westridge and come down Canyonback Ridge, which is a clockwise direction. You’ll then have to walk a bit on the road to get back to your car at the end. It’s a great hike for a half day excursion.

Challenging Los Angeles hikes

Mount Baldy

Mount Baldy or otherwise known as Mount San Antonio, is the highest point in LA County putting it at the top of any keen hiker’s bucket list. Standing at 10, 000 feet the mountain sits in San Gabriel Mountains and is characterized by the treeless summit. 

While there are a few variations to get to the top, this 11-mile loop is a popular choice. The trailheads along the ridgeline of Devil’s Backbone to the summit and then descends along the Baldy Bowl Trail. This is a serious hike with decent elevation gain which should only be completed by fit people in good weather conditions.

Echo Mountain via Sam Merrill Trail

Often considered as one of the best hikes in California, a walk-up Echo Mountain is a must for keen hikers in Los Angeles. The 5.5 mile return hike is popular but equally challenging, gaining 1460 feet over the course of the trail. 

It conveniently starts in Altadena just north of Pasadena, so it’s easy to reach within minutes. Following an old railway route, it climbs up to the top of the mountain to stunning panoramic views. For those looking for an even longer hike, you can add on Inspiration Point for an extended version.

Malibu hikes

You can’t write about LA hikes without mentioning the Malibu area. The stunning coastal city west of LA, includes the Santa Monica Mountains running along Southern California’s Pacific Ocean. This means that it’s home to some great hikes in the area.

Here are the most popular and interesting day hikes around Santa Barbara.

What you need to know about hiking in Santa Barbara

• Mountain biking is popular on some of these trails, which means hikers and riders have to share the same paths. Be alert to riders flying down the hills and try to keep to one side of the trail.
• Some of these trails are heavily exposed once you climb above the treeline, this means that you need to be prepared to be sun smart. Carry sunscreen, SPF lip balm, a hat and sunglasses with you.
• Many hikes in the Los Padres National Forest mentioned below require an Adventure Pass purchased from the Forest Service. This needs to be displayed in your vehicle. There are daily passes for $5 and yearly passes for $30 available. You can find out more here.
• There is also an entry ticket required for Botanic Gardens, which charges around $16 for entry per adult.
• On hot summer days keep an eye on the trail for snakes. Santa Barbara has venomous snakes including rattlesnakes, although sightings of these are rare, you should be aware of where you’re stepping on the trail.
• Poison oak is rampant throughout the Santa Barbara area and you need to be able to recognize its green leaves so you can avoid it. It can pose a serious threat to those who are allergic to it.
• Most trails in Santa Barbara are well maintained with signposts but take a GPS or map if you’re concerned about navigation.
• Masks are required indoors in Santa Barbara, but not outdoors and while hiking. There are no COVID restrictions for outdoor activity in California.

1. Inspiration Point Trail

Inspiration Point is one of the most popular day hikes in Santa Barbara. The aim is to reach the aptly named summit at 1800 feet which offers stunning views over the city skyline to the Channel Islands and back to the Santa Ynez Mountains.

There are two options with this hike. The shorter and more popular option is to start at what is referred to as Inspiration Point Trailhead on Tunnel Road. From there, take the Tunnel Trail until you reach the intersection with the Jesusita Trail. You then turn left onto this trail which takes you to the summit and popular lookout.

A longer and more scenic option is to start at San Roque Road on the other side of the range. From there, take the Jesusita Trail up to Inspiration Point and back, which is an 8-mile round trip. This day hike offers more ocean views on the ascent but requires much more of your time and effort to complete.

Most people take the 3.75-mile option via Tunnel Trail and do it in the late afternoon with the golden sun offering the best photo conditions.

2. Seven Falls Trail

The Seven Falls hike is one of the most fun trails of the area. The hike starts at the same trailhead as Inspiration Point and follows the same trail at first. However, at the intersection, instead of turning onto the Jesusita Trail which takes you up to the lookout, you need to keep going and follow Mission Creek upstream towards the falls.

The hike requires a bit of rock hopping or wading through water after heavy rains, which makes it a fun and exciting trail. When you come to the falls, you’ll find several stone basins cascading down the valley. After spring rainfall, these become deep natural swimming holes, so don’t forget to bring your swimsuit.

It’s the best hike to enjoy on a hot summer’s day.

3. Jesusita Trail

The Jesusita Trail is a great hike to take in all the stunning views across the mountain range immediately above Santa Barbara. The hike starts at the Jesusita Trailhead off San Roque Road. It takes you up through the San Roque Canyon and crosses over the creek multiple times as you follow the marked trail.

Once you hit the top of the ridge, the dirt track continues until you reach Inspiration Point, a popular lookout. Once you’ve taken in the beautiful views over the ocean and city below, the trail continues down the backside of the mountain until it meets up with the Tunnel Trail.

This is a point to point hike rather than a loop. You’ll need to either hike back the same way to your car or arrange a pick up from Tunnel Road.

4. Romero Canyon Trail

The Romero Canyon trail is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers, although it sees far less traffic than some of the others closer to downtown Santa Barbara.

The Romero trail is one of the few loop hikes in the area, meaning you can have a more varied return to the start point. It’s a relatively challenging long day hike but is incredibly rewarding.

The trail starts just off Bella Vista Drive and winds its way through the shady canyon following Romero Creek. Eventually, the trail crosses over old Romero Road and continues steeply up to the top of the Santa Ynez Range. If you take the side trail to the left, you’ll make it to the top of Romero Saddle, where you’ll enjoy one of the best views in the city stretching right across the ocean to the Channel Islands.

From there you can follow the dirt Romero Canyon Road back down rather than following the same trail.

5. Montecito Peak Trail

Montecito Peak is one of the highest points of the Santa Ynez Range. If you’re after epic views and a challenging climb, then this Santa Barbara hike is perfect for you. The views along the whole trail are worthwhile, but the 360-degree vista of the Pacific coast from the summit is the absolute highlight.

The trail starts at the Cold Spring Trailhead, off East Mountain Drive in Montecito. You’ll follow the trail on the east bank of the Cold Springs Creek through the Los Padres National Forest. As you climb higher the vegetation starts to thin and you’ll be more exposed as the views start to reveal themselves.

When you finally reach the top of the peak, the view stretches right down the coastline and out across to Channel Islands. 

6. Rattlesnake Canyon Trail

Rattlesnake Canyon is not as frightening as it sounds. It’s a relatively easy return hike that is much less crowded than Inspiration Point and Seven Falls in the adjacent canyon.

The trailhead is at the top end of Skofield Park and is marked by a large sign. The gentle trail follows a creek through beautiful forest and wildflowers. You can return the same way you came to make it a shorter 3.5-mile hike.

However, it’s worth taking the turnoff onto the trail that reaches further up the canyon to Gibraltar Road where you can get a beautiful ocean view. If you include this side trip then it becomes a longer but worthwhile 5-mile return hike.

7. Channel Islands National Park

The five islands that make up the Channel Islands National Park have countless hiking trails. While the islands are not far off the mainland, you’ll find a completely different experience with unique flora and fauna and raw beauty.

The islands each have their own look and feel, from Anacapa Island’s flatter and well-maintained trails to the more rugged and unsigned paths of Santa Rosa Island.

You can take a local boat across to Santa Cruz island daily or Anacapa on five days of the week. These are the two most popular islands to visit and the boat ride is just an hour from the mainland. From there, you can navigate your own way around the small islands on marked trails.

Reaching the other islands usually requires a private chartered boat.

8. Tangerine Falls Trail

The 100-foot Tangerine Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Santa Barbara. The spectacular seasonal falls make for a great place to hike through the West Fork Cold Spring Canyon in the Los Padres National Forest. 

The trail starts just left of the trailhead for the Montecito Peak climb. It winds its way through a shady canyon while rock hopping over the creek. You’ll pass several short cascades and the final climb over exposed boulders will take you to the bottom of the flowing Tangerine Falls.

The falls are seasonal and it’s best to visit them just after the peak spring rains, otherwise it can be just a trickle in summer.

9. Cathedral Peak Trail

Cathedral Peak is one of the most challenging day hikes in Santa Barbara. It’s a strenuous four-mile return trail that gains over 2000-feet and requires climbing over boulders and navigating difficult terrain.

For all the hard work, it’s one of the most rewarding hikes with wondrous views over the Santa Ynez Range. The hike begins at the same trailhead as Inspiration Point and Seven Falls. However, instead of turning left at the junction to the Jesusita Trail, you need to take the trail to the right that goes directly up towards the rugged peak.

Once you reach the spectacular viewpoint, there’s even a more challenging option. For the fit and daring, you can continue on to La Cumbre Peak, which is further up along an undefined route.

10. Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Trail

• Start/finish: Mission Canyon Road
• Distance: More than 5-miles of trails
• Difficulty: Easy

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is a 78-acre nature reserve with more than 1000 rare and native plant species. It’s one of the best places in the city to slip into the natural beauty of the area with over 5-miles of trails through redwoods and meadows.

The most popular trail is the Porter Trail which offers the best views in the garden. Besides nature, you’ll also find an authentic Japanese Teahouse and Garden as well as the historic Mission Dam which was built in 1807.

The Gardens have an admission fee of $16 for adults and are only open from 9 am to 5 pm daily.

Conclusion

Santa Barbara is one of the best cities in California for hikers. The beautiful location on the Pacific coast with the backdrop of the Santa Ynez Range means the views from most of the trails are incredibly striking. From challenging climbs to easier forest walks, Santa Barbara offers hikes for everyone.

Hike Distance: 27 kilometers

Hike Duration: Around 11h

Hike Difficulty: Hard. Firstly, the incline is 1716 meters and the decline is 1912 meters, which is very steep even for more advanced hikers. You will spend 60% of the hike either climbing up or going down. Secondly, it’s quite long on top of the incline/decline with 27 kilometers to cover. There are a few moments of exposure but there isn’t anything very technical on this hike that requires mountaineering skills. Just being extremely careful.

How to get to the start

There are two options to start the hike:

1. Parque Empresarial de Sao Vicente parking lot
2. Nossa Senhora da Paz church (for a longer hike)

There are two ways to get to the start of the hike. Either via taxi or renting a car. My advice would be if you have a car leave it at Ponta do Sol and grab a taxi to the start of the trail.

Below you can see the two starting points for this hike.

What to take with you

Besides the traditional list for a day hike, I would suggest bringing:

• Lunch – a few sandwiches or something similar for a quick meal
• Snacks – granola bars, trail mix or something of your preference
• A headlamp – you will encounter 5 long and dark tunnels

If you run out of water, you can use Levada to refill.

Section by section guide 

Disclaimer – The guide below is just my recount. Make sure you analyze the map yourself and are comfortable navigating it on your own. Don’t follow word for word what is written below as your only source of truth for this hike.

Section 1

Starting at Parque Empresarial de Sao Vicente follow a few meters on the main road until you hit the dirt road leading to the Levada Faja Do Rodrigues.

Once you reach the marking for this trail cross the Levada and continue heading on the main dirt road.

There will be 7 turns on this dirt road before you reach the start of Levada Norte.

You will be able to identify the start of the Levada Norte by seeing a parking lot and a house on the left.

Section 2 

Start hiking on Levada Norte to the left from where you came. Leaving a parking lot at your back.

It’s an easy section. Continue hiking Levada Norte/PR17 since they interchange until you pass 1 short and 5 long tunnels. At this stage, you shouldn’t be climbing up or down.

Bring a headlamp. It’s dark in the tunnels, they are long and sometimes you have water up to your knees.

After the final tunnel, you will come upon a forked way with some benches. Turn right, onto Levada dos Rabacas.

Section 3

After turning right keep going. Along the way, you will pass through a tunnel. Keep in mind there will be spots with no handrails here.

If there is heavy wind be careful and wait for the gusts of wind to pass before continuing hiking.

After passing a mountain hut, you will come up near the tunnel on your right. You do not need to go in. It’s closed for the public.

Continue going past it into the bushes near the Levada and look for a small trail leading on the exposed part of the hill. It was visible when we hiked the trail.

Start climbing the mountain and keep on the trail that leads toward the right and up the mountain before you reach a pink house and a fence.

Section 4

From the house follow the stone wall/fence until you reach a trail, take a right and follow the trail until you find the stairs going up towards the road.

Once you reach the road, take left. Keep on walking until you reach the boom barrier.

After passing the boom barrier take the first dirt road on your left. Keep on going down the road. Once you reach the first turn right, take it. Keep on the trail for 10-15min until you reach a gate built to protect cows from leaving it and cross it.

Hike until you reach a Levada. Continue hiking for 1 km until you notice a small hill and electric wire towers. Somewhere in between the first and second is a car road.

Section 5

The trail takes via old forgotten car roads towards an old non-working Levada.

If you found the correct road near the electric towers, continue going down all the way to the Levada Techo.

Ignoring the first right and after always keeping on the right, at some point, you will come up near the place where the road splits into 3 way.

Take the most right and continue going a little bit up the hill before starting to descend.

Be aware that when hiking this Levada some sections are either falling apart or gone altogether. If you reached a section where there is no more trail, it means Levada has fallen apart and you hiked too far. There are only 2 options –  climbing the wall (like an idiot) or go back a 100m and turn right.

The road down takes you to the Levada Nova. Go left and follow all the way to the city. Once you hit the car road turn right and always keep on the right, never turn left to reach the old town of Ponta do Sol.

To sum it all up – the hike is hard. However, it is one of the most beautiful hikes on the island. You see 5 different Levadas and every time you turn a corner there’s another amazing view to take in. All this beauty makes up for the tough climb that comes with it!

• Badlands’ climate is extreme. If you come in the summer be prepared for temperatures up to 110F with no shade on the trails
• There is only one restaurant in the park. Consider that before packing your food
• Two main campgrounds of the park are Cedar Pass and Sage Creek.
  • Cedar Pass campground is open year-round, with some limits in the winter months. Reservations can be done online or via phone. Campground is paid but has more amenities.
  • Sage Creek is open throughout the year, no reservations are available and is free of charge (however, no water is available).

Getting In / Getting Out 

You can only get to the park by car. 

I-90 road provides easy access to the Badlands loop road, the main road through the park. 

Enjoy this scenic drive, it’s as beautiful as the walk in the park.  

The drive leads you through a mixed landscape of grasslands and the Badlands. Along the way, there are multiple pullouts to stop and enjoy the Badlands wilderness. 

While driving keep your eyes open for potential sightings of a lone bison, a dear or a bighorn sheep. 

For those that will be using GPS to get in, here are the coordinates – Latitude: 43.748110671963 – Longitude: -101.945786522360.

Mandatory Gear For A Hike in Badlands National Park

It’ll vary depending on the season you arrive, but the core will be the same.

• A day pack
• A hat
• Sturdy hiking shoes or trail runners with good ankle support. The trail is uneven and can be slippery if it rained.
• Food (snacks, sandwiches)
• Bring at least a gallon for a day’s hike
• Sunglasses and sunscreen
• Hiking pants and long hiking shirt to avoid getting sunburnt
• Optional warm fleece if you arrive early in the morning or/and leave late in the night
• Optional rain gear if you plan to explore the park for more than a day

The must-do hiking trails in Badlands National Park

Notch Trail

It’s a short 1.33-mile round trip hike with spectacular views. For those who have a fear of heights, it’s best to skip this one as you need to scale up a steep ledge on this hike. Otherwise, an enjoyable and slightly dangerous hike awaits you. The trailhead is at the south end of the Door and Window trail parking area. The fun will start when you reach a 50-foot ladder leading to the top of the rock. 

From there, a short trail follows the ledge, passing right beside the cliff and will lead you to an abrupt cliff edge at the top of the hill which looks like a Notch. This is where it got its name and offers one of the best views of the White River Valley.

• Difficulty: moderate to strenuous if you are not used to hiking.

Door Trail

This is a short 1-mile round trip trail that takes you to the heart of the Badlands. If you have ever wondered why this place is called Badlands, you will understand after hiking this trail. The culmination of the hike is the view of the steep eroded canyons and rock formations where life seems impossible.

The trailhead is at the Door and Window parking area and is on boardwalk that leads you to a break in the wall known as the “Door”.

• Trail starts: north end of the Window, Door, and Notch trail parking area.

Window Trail

The shortest and the most trafficked trail in the park at only 0.2-mile length. It’s similar to the Door Trail in that it is on a boardwalk trail leading to a large opening in a wall, except that you can’t pass through like at the Door. If you have little time, this is the best way to experience true Badlands. However, it’s particularly beautiful at sunset time, if you can time your visit for golden hour, you will appreciate the incredible geologic rock formations even more.

Castle Trail

The longest and probably the most spectacular trail in Badlands National Park stretches the whole 5.5 miles. Being in a more backcountry area and a bit less trafficked trail, there is a greater chance to encounter some wildlife along the way. You might have the opportunity of spotting, bison, mountain bighorn sheep, skunks, and prairie rattlesnakes.

Despite its length, this trail is not overly hard so don’t let the distance put you off doing it. The trail crosses open prairie into rugged gullies, weaves through a maze of spires, buttes, sod tables, and fins, all masterfully blended with the open prairie. There are many viewpoints to enjoy of the Badlands Wall and of the White River Valley. 

At the end of the trail, before turning back, cross The Badlands Loop Road and explore a short 0.4-mile Fossil Exhibit Loop Trail. On the way back, you can hike the Medicine Root Trail to avoid repeating the same route.

Medicine Root Trail

This is an easy hike with views in the distance of the Badlands and chances to sight bisons, skunks, prairie dogs, bighorn sheeps, and other wildlife on the way. It’s also well-known for beautiful wildflowers and cacti growing around the trail.

The 4-mile Medicine Root Loop trail traces gentle rolling hills and intersects with Saddle Pass Trail and Castle Trail at one point, if you want to make it an extended hike.

• Length: 4 miles
• Trail starts: at the north end of the parking lot. On the other side of the road going towards Notch trail.

• Tip: watch out for cactus and rattlesnakes

Fossil Exhibit Trail

This is a very short 0.4 mile-long loop trail. Do not expect dinosaur fossils here though, as it’s more of a visitor center kinda hike. It’s on a boardwalk (but you are allowed to walk off the boardwalk) with boards explaining the type of fossils found in the area. It’s a great hike to get to know the region and history about the place and is one of the most accessible trails in the park.

It can be included with the Castle Trail, for a nice longer hike, or keep it short for the whole family to enjoy.

Best day hikes around San Francisco

Presidio of San Francisco

The Presidio of San Francisco is the 1500-acre northern tip of the city center. It’s an iconic area which connects to the Golden Gate Bridge. The park area features plenty of hiking trails where you can get up close to the bridge as well as some beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean coastline. It’s one of the most easily accessible park areas, you can reach it within walking distance from the city center. 

Golden Gate Promenade

• Start/finish: Crissy Field Center (37.805996, -122.450953)
• Distance: 3.5 miles
• Elevation Gain: 250 feet
• Difficulty: Easy
• Dogs: Allowed on leash

If you start on the eastern side of the Presidio at the Crissy Field Center, you can follow the Golden Gate Promenade along the coast to the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center for a 1.7-mile walk. This is also popular with runners and cyclists with a paved multiuse area. You’ll have beautiful city, coastal and bridge views along the path.

Batteries to Bluff Trail

• Distance: 2.2 miles
• Elevation Gain: 449 feet
• Difficulty: Easy

You can also explore the western side of the Presidio. From a parking lot along Lincoln Avenue, you can follow the Batteries to Bluff trail which leads to Baker Beach for a fairly easy walk. This is one of the most memorable trails you can do at sunset with some of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco bay. 

Golden Gate Bridge walk

Walking over the Golden Gate Bridge is perhaps one of the most iconic activities to do in San Francisco. You can extend your walk in the Presidio and continue across the bridge. It spans 1.7 miles long, but you can just walk as far as you like before returning back the same way. 

It can be extremely windy and noisy, but even a short walk along the sidewalk of the bridge is a must-do experience. The view stretches right out across the water and towards the East Bay.

Land’s End Trail

• Start/finish: Lands’ End Eagle Point (37.786740, -122.494837)
• Distance: 3.4-mile round trip
• Elevation Gain: 530 ft
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Dogs: Allowed on leash

The Land’s End Trail is an impressive coastal trail that has great views of the rugged coastline and back towards the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s a relatively short trail and mostly gradual, although there are a few short hills involved. The trail is one of the more popular ones in the Bay Area with the Land’s End viewpoint becoming a famous photo spot. This means it’s best completed mid-week or early in the morning if you want to avoid the crowds.

The trailhead is not far from the city center and is easily reachable by either car or public bus.

Mount Davidson

• Start/finish: Mount Davidson Park Entrance (37.736955, -122.453921)
• Distance: 1-mile round trip
• Elevation Gain: 245ft
• Difficulty: Easy
• Dogs: Allowed on leash

Mount Davidson is the highest point in San Francisco. Although the trail to reach its summit is short and not too difficult, the view makes it a worthwhile hike. The trail is rocky but easy to follow as it gradually ascends up to a large cross sitting at 927 feet. You’ll have a panoramic view of the city skyline from the viewpoint.

It generally takes less than an hour to get up to the top and back and dogs are allowed on a leash. 

Twin Peaks

• Distance: 2.1-mile out and back
• Elevation Gain: 270ft
• Difficulty: Easy

Twin Peaks is a hilltop 64-acre park with hiking trails and beautiful views over the city. It’s one of the most popular places for both locals and tourists to go for a hike and even a run or ride with multipurpose trails. It’s San Francisco’s second highest point and the place is especially spectacular at sunrise or sunset. 

You can drive close to the top of the Twin Peaks for an easier alternative. However, for a 2.1 mile walk it’s best to follow the Twin Peaks Boulevard to the top from the bottom car park. It’s heavily trafficked with runners, cyclists and cars all using the same trail, so be aware of your surroundings. You’re rewarded with 360-degree views stretching right across the bay at the top. 

The Twin peaks park area is not far from the city center and is easily reachable by either car or public bus. Although, the buses do not continue to the top but you can get out at the base to do the full 2.1-mile return walk.

Angel Island

• Start/finish: Ferry terminal (37.868519, -122.434632)
• Distance: 5.5-mile round trip
• Elevation Gain: 350ft
• Difficulty: Easy
• Dogs: Allowed on leash

Angel Island is the largest landmass in the Bay Area. It offers one of the most underrated hiking adventures in the city, with incredible views over the bay in all directions. 

The island is accessible by a 12-minute public ferry ride operated every hour or by private boat. There is a five-and-a-half-mile paved road that circumnavigates the island and takes in the beautiful coastal and city views along the way. This is a popular and relatively easy walk that is suitable for families. 

For something a little more strenuous, there are designated pedestrian only trails that lead up to the summit of Mt Livermore at 788-feet. To get to the summit, take the North Ridge Summit trail from the ferry terminal and you’ll meander to the top. The 360 degree views from the island’s highest point are considered some of the best in the city.

Redwood Regional Park

• Start/finish: Skyline Gate Staging Area (37.831708, -122.185372)
• Distance: 2.2-miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: 370 feet
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Dogs: Allowed on leash

The Redwood Regional Park is a popular place to enjoy the great outdoors not far from Oakland on the East Bay. It’s one of the largest intact forests of redwood trees in the country and with around 40 miles of hiking trails, it’s easy to get away from the crowds of the city. 

The Skyline Gate Staging Area is a great place to start with a few trail options to choose from. Most people complete a loop hike by picking one of either the West Ridge Trail or East Ridge Trail and then turning at the junctions until you find yourself back at Skyline Gate. But you can realistically extend your hike by following other trails deeper into the forest, as long as you have some sort of map or GPS with you so you know how to return.

The trailhead is east of Oakland and easiest to reach by car. However, there is a public bus network that runs from Oakland center to Skyline Boulevard near the park.

Mount Diablo via Mitchell Canyon

• Start/finish: Mitchell Canyon Parking Lot (37.921165, -121.941197)
• Distance: 14 miles round trip 
• Elevation Gain: 3500 feet
• Difficulty: Hard
• Dogs: No dogs

For a challenging day hike, this ranks as one of the best in the region. The challenging hike up to the top of Mount Diablo from Mitchell Canyon offers the greatest views stretching for over 200 miles on a clear day. 

It’s best to tackle the loop counter-clockwise which has a more gradual elevation change and follows a fire road rather than a narrow trail. Start the hike early for a cooler climate and to allow yourself enough time to enjoy the view at the top. The visitor center at the summit offers a nice reward with water and toilet facilities available. Most people take around 6 hours to complete this day hike. 

If you prefer to experience this impressive peak in an easier way, you can drive to the visitor center and walk the 1-mile loop known as Mary Bowerman Loop Trail which takes in the views around the 3849-foot mountain.

The trailhead is east of the city area and only reachable by car.

Berry Creek Falls

• Start/finish: State Park Headquarters (37.172839, -122.222652)
• Distance: 10.5-miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: 2150 feet
• Difficulty: Hard
• Dogs: No dogs

Although it’s a bit further out from San Francisco, this challenging hike to Berry Creek Falls is a great day trip in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California’s oldest state park.

The trail takes you through old redwood forest and along trickling creeks to the viewing platform of the 65-foot falls. It’s an especially popular trail for bird watchers with incredible flora and fauna to admire along the way. It’s become a popular hiking destination in the park so you might prefer to attempt it during the week or in winter to avoid the crowds.

The Big Basin Redwoods State Park is south of San Francisco and is best reached by your own car with no direct public transport.

Alamere Falls 

• Start/finish: Palomarin Trailhead (37.934301, -122.747154)
• Distance: 13 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: 1205 feet
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Dogs: No dogs

Alamere Falls is a beautiful sight to behold. The tumbling waterfall cascades down a 40 foot cliff onto Wildcat Beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore. The unique coastal waterfall can be reached by the Coast Trail from Palomarin Trailhead.  

The trail mostly takes you through wooded scrubland until you reach the coast. The final trail to get down to the beach to view the falls is quite steep so be prepared to scramble down. Admire the rare view of a waterfall tumbling onto a beach before heading back. 

Check the tide schedule before heading out on this hike to ensure you’ll be able to get down to the beach safely. 

The Point Reyes National Seashore is north of the city center and is best reached by car with no direct public transport options to the Palomarin Trailhead.

Conclusion

Whether you’re after stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge or prefer to lose yourself in beautiful redwood forests, the San Francisco Bay Area has plenty of hiking trails for everyone. It’s beautiful location on the Pacific coast makes it a popular destination, but you can easily find plenty of unique experiences in this scenic urban area.
