2. Waterproof cover

You never know when it might rain on a hike. Taking a waterproof cover for your daypack as well as a rain jacket or poncho for yourself, is never a bad idea. Weather can change quite quickly, especially in mountainous areas, and so being prepared for wet weather is important for keeping yourself dry.

This means having base layers for comfort against your skin, mid-layers for insulation and outer layers for warmth and weather protection. As you start to move and generate body heat, you can peel the layers off to cool down. If you stop for a snack, you can then replace some of the layers to keep yourself warm. Depending on the season you plan to hike in, it’s also important to have clothes that are breathable, so that you won’t sweat too much or overheat as you exert energy.

10. Food and nutrition

It’s important to bring enough energy along with you to sustain yourself for a full day of hiking. It’s always best to carry slightly more than you think you’ll need, in case your hike is longer or more difficult than planned. 

High energy snacks are the best food items to pack for a day hike. Protein or granola bars are popular items, as are a trail mix made of nuts and dried fruits and beef jerky. For a more substantial meal, you can pack a sandwich or biscuits. Hard meats like salami and cheeses can be appropriate high-energy foods for a day hike too. 

11. Multitool/knife

A multitool or Swiss Army knife can come in handy in many different situations while hiking. You can use it for a variety of repair needs as well as even simple tasks like opening food packets. While they can be heavy, there are plenty of different options out there for you to choose from.

12. Headlamp

Although a headlamp might not immediately come to mind when thinking about what to take on a day hike, it should definitely be considered as essential gear. A headlamp is important in case your hike takes you longer than expected. If you find yourself out on a trail as the sun is setting, it’s much more comforting knowing that you have a way of illuminating the ground as you make your way back.

13. Firestarter

Having the tools to make an emergency fire is a safety essential. Carrying firestarter cubes and waterproof matches, don’t add much weight to your daypack but they can ensure that you can start a fire if you need. 

14. Emergency shelter/blanket

An emergency shelter or blanket is an essential safety item for your day hike. In the rare occurrence that you might have to unexpectedly spend a night outdoors, an emergency shelter can protect you from the elements.

They are usually lightweight and compact and can easily slide down into your pack. They don’t take up too much room in your daypack, but they can potentially save your life.

Extra winter daypack essential items

In winter months your essential items list gets a little longer with extra gear for warmth and insulation required. You may also require a bigger daypack in winter to carry the extra gear, but this is important so that you stay warm and safe during your hike.

Footwear

For most hikes, wearing trail runners or hiking shoes are sufficient. However, in colder and tougher conditions like in winter, you may want to consider investing in hiking boots. Hiking boots are generally more sturdy, insulated and waterproof, making them more ideal for winter day hikes. 

However, if you’re going to be hiking in substantial snow or ice, you might want to consider using additional accessories like microspikes or crampons for grip on the slippery trails. Just ensure that whatever footwear you decide to wear are well broken to prevent blisters and so that you know that they are definitely comfortable for a long day.

Hat and gloves

In order to trap your body heat, you should pack a warm hat like a knitted beanie for your head and thermal gloves for your hands. This will help keep your blood circulating as you move. You can choose between either wool or synthetic materials, depending on what you prefer, with merino wool often being considered the best for warmth and insulation.

Insulated jacket

For winter day hikes, you should consider packing a down jacket. These jackets are best as outer layers and can keep you very warm in freezing conditions. For the best insulation, you should look at natural down rather than synthetic. These are lightweight, keep your heat inside and can pack down small to fit into your daypack.

Pants

To keep your legs warm in winter, you can opt for thicker hiking pants or decide to layer up on the bottom too. You can wear a thermal base layer or underwear underneath your regular hiking pants. Otherwise, you can invest in winter-specific pants that have a fleece lining or made from thicker material to keep you warm. 

Despite looking for warmth, you should also ensure that you’re still able to move freely and don’t feel restricted by overly thick and bulky material.  

Mid-layer insulation 

A middle layer item should trap your body heat and keep you warm in winter. It’s best to keep your mid-layer as a fitted and lightweight option so as not to restrict your movements. You can choose between an ultralight fleece or a thin-down jacket. An important tip is to make a mid-layer a zip-up item so that you can remove it or allow air circulation if you get hot.

Base-layer insulation 

Base-layers are what you wear against your skin as the first layer. While in summer your base layer is more likely a t-shirt, however, in winter, your base layer should be a thermal top for greater insulation. Extra items beyond essential hiking needs

Depending on the hike you choose to do, there are extra items for your hiking checklist that you might consider taking with you to add extra comfort or enjoyment to your day. These are all dependent on your own personal preference and what kind of trail you’ll be using.

Trekking poles

Trekking poles may not be considered essential by every hiker, but many don’t like hiking without them. The main benefit of using trekking poles is to increase stability and decrease the impact on your joints. They can be especially useful for rocky terrain, fording rivers and when the trail has long ascents and descents. 

If you know that you have particularly bad knees or ankles, it can also be a good idea to use trekking poles to lessen the impact and reduce soreness.

Gaiters

Gaiters are protective gear worn over your lower legs and shoes. They can be useful in protecting yourself from scree, mud and water from rain or snow, as well as leeches and potential snake bites. Camera

Insect repellent 

Depending on where you’re hiking, insects and bugs like mosquitos and flies might be a problem. Carrying bug spray with you might be able to keep them from annoying you while you’re hiking. Toilet paper

Bringing along a bag to carry your trash out is a smart item to bring in your daypack. Then you can easily dispose of the rubbish when you finish your hike and find a proper bin.

Duct tape

Packing some sort of tough tape is a good idea as a repair kit. Duct tape can fix a lot of tears or broken gear while you’re out on the trail. You can use it to repair sunglasses, trekking poles or even cover a tear in a water bladder or rain cover, as well as much more.

Daypacks for camping and backpacking

Once you need to carry more than 20 pounds, you really should consider a backpack that has a more structured frame and perhaps more padding in the straps, as these things are not always featured on regular daypacks.

A pack between 10 and 20 liters can be purposed for any activity that requires not a lot of gear, such as day hiking in summer months. They tend to have more pockets to fit in extra items.

Medium sized daypacks (20-35L)

This is the ideal daypack size for most activities. This allows enough capacity to carry all the essentials as well as some extras like a camera, warmer gear and a first aid kit. They are the perfect all-round daypack for multiple seasons and uses.

Large daypacks (35-50L)

Larger daypacks over 35 liters are for heavier loads or longer excursions that require more gear. They can be good for winter day hikes when you need extra warm clothing or for climbing or mountaineering equipment.

Depending on what hike you decide to undertake, there are plenty of things that you need to consider when choosing the right winter jacket. You need to think about the kinds of conditions and weather that you will likely face as this will impact what kind of jacket you need. The different materials, features and weather resistance that you can find in various jackets will depend on your needs, preferences and expected trail conditions. 

Layering

Layering is one of the best ways to keep yourself warm and dry with each layer having specific purposes. Your base layer is for wicking away sweat and keeping you feeling dry. While your middle and outer layers are for insulation and weather resistance.

Jackets are designed to be the middle or outer layer. This means that when you’re choosing your jacket you should make sure that there is plenty of room for you to add layers underneath it. There is also a key difference between mid-layers, which are usually soft shell, insulating jackets, and outer layers, which are generally hard shell, waterproof jackets. This difference will impact the materials, weight and added features that the jacket has.

Material

The type of material you need to consider will depend on what purpose the jacket needs to have. For example, a waterproof jacket will be made from different materials than a warm, insulating down jacket.

Synthetic materials: Materials like nylon and polyester with added spandex have added stretch and are more fitted. These synthetic materials can have features like quick drying, sweat wicking and added warmth. 

Merino wool: Some soft-shell jackets may also be made from this natural material that has moisture wicking, insulating and odourless properties. 

Synthetic insulation: Synthetic down provides warm insulation, however, their warmth to weight ratio is not as good as feathered down. 

Feathered down: Duck or goose down jackets have superior heat retention and warmth, however, they’re not practical in wet weather and take a long time to dry.

Gore-tex or durable water resistant coating: Outer shells or hard shell jackets usually have some sort of waterproof membrane or water resistant coating for keeping the elements at bay.

Weight

The weight of the jacket may not be your first concern, but it’s something that you should consider especially if you need something that will not restrict your movement or be too bulky to pack into your daypack. 

Typically, fleece and lightweight synthetic materials will be the lightest options. Down jackets can also be lightweight and can even be packed down into their own sacks for easy portability. In comparison, thick, hard-shell waterproof jackets can be quite heavy.

Breathability

Breathability is one of the most important qualities of a winter hiking jacket. You still sweat in cold weather and it’s important to make sure that your clothes will allow you to regulate your body temperature while you’re moving. It’s when you get wet and cold that winter hiking can become uncomfortable and dangerous to your health, so breathable clothing is extremely important.

Mid-layer jackets made from synthetic materials like nylon or natural fibres like merino wool will be more breathable than hard shell or waterproof options. However, this is where layering your clothing becomes important. Layering will allow you to take off your outer layers to a more breathable mid-layer jacket when you get too warm. 

Insulation

Heat retention and insulation becomes important when the weather is extremely cold or when you stop moving. It can be difficult to keep yourself warm when you stop for a break in winter or the temperature drops below freezing. This is when insulating layers become important. 

Some mid-layers made from synthetic materials like fleece or natural fibres like merino wool offer some form of insulating effect when layered. However, for optimal insulation in cold conditions most people prefer either a feathered down or synthetic down jacket.

These puffy jackets have incredible heat retention properties that can keep you warm even in sub-zero weather. As mentioned above, goose or duck down has the best warmth to weight ratio, meaning they are incredibly lightweight for the amount of heat they can retain.

Durability

If you’re heading into the backcountry and likely going to be hiking over rough terrain, then durability might be an important factor for you to consider. Durability simply means that your jacket can be worn over and over again without failing. 

Although price sometimes impacts the durability of a product, it can also come down to the materials used. You can look for ripstop fabrics which are woven materials like nylon which resist tearing. Tough outer shell membranes are also durable materials, as long as you stick with a reputable brand.

Weather resistance

Weather resistance is an extremely important winter hiking criteria, especially if you expect to encounter snow, rain and wind on your hike. However, hiking jackets come in a variety of different levels of weather resistance. 

Terms like water-resistant, waterproof and water repellent are all technically different. Fully waterproof membranes such as Gore-Tex are the best options for outer shell jackets that will keep you completely dry in a downpour. These membranes completely stop water from penetrating into the fabric and are also windproof. Other options are usually synthetic materials with a durable water resistance (DWR) coating applied on top. This will repel rain and water from the jacket, but over time this coating can wear down. 

Extra features

The criteria for extra features comes down to your own personal preference and practicality. 

Length

A slightly longer jacket will help protect you from the elements more than a shorter jacket. Some people opt for a jacket that extends past their waist which can add more warmth but can also restrict your movement more than a standard jacket.

Pockets

Pockets are important for hiking because they allow you to carry essentials that you want to have easy access to. Most jackets will at least have pockets for your hands, with some even offering insulated hand warmer pockets that are fleece lined. Some jackets also have internal pockets for small things or items that you want to ensure stay warm and dry. 

Hoods

Whether you opt for a jacket with a hood or not really comes down to your personal preference and style. If you’re someone who likes to use a hood for warmth, then it can be a good feature.
