Puglia – Italy is the location of this post. Toyota Yaris is the car. And 5 beaches are the destination. Up and down the Puglia region to reach the chosen beaches.

The car had air conditioning thus the heat was not a problem. The navigation was funky. Since any and every road speed limit was 90 km/h we drove more time across the small countryside roads through the grape fields rather than highways.

First, stop Polignano A Mare

A magnificent beach etched in the cliffs. On one side high above the cliffs is the old town of Polignano A Mare and on the other side along cliffy ridge going on and on until it reaches the next village or city.

There are two beaches here. One a bit further going were the local fishermen take their boats out to the sea. You can find more locals here and the first is nearby the old town.

If you would like to experience a bit more authentic life of the Italian dream then by all means swim and rest near the fisherman boats with the local Italians who are tired of the tourists.

However, if you would like to see people jumping from the cliffs, be surrounded by history and tourist than the second beach is a place to go. Both are perfect spots to spend some time and enjoy the atmosphere.

Do not forget to visit Antiche Mura for a fantastic fresh seafood!

Second stop Baia Dei Turchi

Long drive with crazy Italian drivers, countryside and small roads to reach this hidden (from tourist) marvelous location. It is a protected area and beaches are wild Well as wild as people that take care of them to ensure that they stay clean. The words cannot describe the view. But the pics and video can!

Third Stop Fiordo Di Ciolo

A place of true beauty ( I know I use beautiful, marvelous and etc quite a lot but it is simply impossible to say that these beaches are not pretty). If you wouldn’t know that there is a beach carved in the cliffs under the bridge you would just drive through it and never be the wiser. It is a place where you always dream to be and find. Quite beside the Italian water divers, beautiful, warm water, kind people and above all serenity that seeps in just from being there.

Controlled during the long periods by many – Greeks, Italians, Hannibal, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Spanish and French. Each bringing a piece of their culture to the region. It had so many rules for a few reasons. For one it was and is a very fertile land. If you travel by car across the region you will notice that almost all and every piece of land is used. To grow crops, olive trees or grapes. And if you decide to take a road across the countryside through one of those farms you will be surprised by the views and the sound of “cicadas”.
The second region which is based more on the economic and geographical reason. Puglia was right on the vain of one of the most important trade routes for at least a thousand years.
Now all in all everyone understands that each ruler was for one and only one thing, exploitation and economical gain. However, with this, each new ruler bequeathed a cultural, architectonic and gastronomic patrimony whose fascinating eclecticism remains for all to see till now.
In this post, I will share the 4 cities we have visited that are generally overlooked by the traditional traveler going to Italy. Each one of them is an exceptional with a fantastic history.

Taranto

I can’t say the city is a beautiful one. It even felt dangerous for the very first time we crossed it, but as we slowly got to know the city more, it really showed its charm. The old town and the new part of the city are connected by the bridge which leaves a feeling that the old town with the beautiful Aragonese castle is built on the island. The first settlement was done sometime 800 BC by the Greek Spartans and throughout the time has changed the owner. Now it is a naval base, a huge commercial port city which is well known as one of the most polluted cities in Western Europe. However, it has its own beauty. The old town at night has its magic even though it looks like a dead place the narrow streets full of various street art bring a spooky beauty to it.

And once crossed the bridge to the new part of the city, commercial streets, bars, restaurants, and a wide pedestrian promenade are always full of people. There we found local pizzerias with extremely cheap and tasty food, a small fruit shop run by the same family members for around 70 years, and not to mention all local people were super friendly and kind.

Funny fact, you can park your car for free in the old town area, however, in the new city part, it was really hard to find free and safe parking. Safe in a sense that it won’t be scratched by passing cars.

Also, it is one of the few places in Italy from where you can take a catamaran to go on to see dolphins.

Matera

A city that until recently still had people living in the caves. Eventually, people got kicked out of their caves because of the rampant number of diseases that plagued the region because of unsanitary living. This place is the second longest inhabited place in the word after Petra. A truly magnificent place and if you go in a morning you can have it all to yourself. Every street and every corner is full of history. One thing to be aware off… It is not a friendly place for the people with an injury nor to the lazy ones. The city streets are built across on hills and as many hills, there are there will be more stairs to follow.

Our advice is to take time at least half a day to just walk and explore the city on foot. Have a coffee break in one of the local beautiful cafe places, visit the artisan stores, and enjoy the heat from the sun :).

For those who love historical art, there are ancient frescas around the city on the walls that are disappearing slowly. And if you are coming by car I suggest visiting the valley on the other side of the small river from which you can see a very beautiful view of the city.

Polignano A Mare

A magnificent white city on the cliffs of the Adriatic sea. With a mystical beach carved between the cliffs with clear sky blue waters. The streets of the city old town even tho has quite a few tourists reminded me of stories from Romeo and Juliet.

Certain streets tagged with quotes from famous people and every color near snow-white houses made the city look more magical story-like.

And the food is just as great.

Takes time to look for but with the help of an app and reviews of people, we found a truly fantastic place to eat seafood :).

The beach is probably in the center of the town and definitely worth to stay a little longer to enjoy the swim. But keep in mind that it is full of stones and you might struggle even to get into the water, however it looks really funny to watch… That’s why lots of people are using swimming footwear to avoid looking like a zombie.

One advice, do not go by car into the old town. It is a nightmare to get out. The streets are very narrow that you can leave the paint on the houses of the city.

Alberobello

The city famous for its ingenious way of avoiding taxes. In the 1500’s, the Acquaviva family, the local rulers within the feudal system, wanted to avoid paying property taxes to the King. They ordered local peasants to build their houses and dwellings without mortar so that, in the event of a royal inspection, the structures could quickly and easily be taken down, and the tax bill would remain low. Using local limestone and some ingenious building techniques, the local population created the Trulli, many of which remain standing today.

Is Alberobello worth a visit?

Well, I won’t lie. It is a very touristic city. However, should it be avoided? Of course no. It is a historical site with a hidden beauty. If lucky and with a bit of planning the masses can be avoided and the site can be all to yourself. But if you cannot time it right it is still a city to see and explore. So definitely a must see. You can even find Trulli for accommodation.

This is only a small part of historical places in Puglia that are worth a visit there are many more like Lecce, Bari – worth a stop just for handmade pasta, Brindisi, Monopoli, Lucera, Vieste and many more places with historical settings and beauty!

This is a slightly different story about the charming country of Italy. In this first installment out of three, we will cover the dark side that really upset us… It upset us sooo much that we simply had to write about it in the first post about Italy. This post will focus mainly on Taranto and the surrounding areas but the problem we noticed here repeated across the whole Puglia region.

But before that a short prelude

Vilnius – Bari flight with Wizzair. Sitting near the emergency exit with extra leg space. So good! In addition, our neighbor is super friendly. So friendly that while we chitchatted about Italy I decided to check our flight backdate… We by accident the ticket back on the same day…

With a bit of an adrenaline once we landed we rushed towards the lounge to get some wifi and buy tickets before they went sky high. We managed to buy them at a fairly low price. Went to Bari got a ticket to Taranto. Saw some palm trees and got happy with the 37 degrees and finally the hot weather. However, shortly after we were shocked that the so-called European country that prides in clean energy and landscapes, progressive mindset and a leading shining star in the world is full of trash and little respect for nature.

The shame of Italy

Now let me tell you the story of the Italian shame. We would say it was one of those rare moments when you are personally ashamed but not because of something you did but because of other people actions.
We will share it with you through the pictures taken in Taranto and areas surrounding it. However, as I mentioned earlier we saw this problem everywhere. Just for simplicity, it is much easier to demonstrate through the scope of one place.
Taranto has a hidden beauty but beauty nonetheless. The old town even if most of it is run down and half-abandoned and if you would be in South America you would not set foot there, has its charms. It has historical buildings to explore at night and frescos hiding in alleys just waiting to be found. Quiet streets with one or two picturestic cafes and restaurants. A different world from the commercial street where the majority of Italians spend their time at night.

Nevertheless, there is foulness in the air. Repulsiveness that is created by the habitats.

We do not claim to be garbage saints. Our country doesn’t have the system to recycle but we are moving towards it. However, we do not leave the trash nor we pollute the environment that surrounds us.

It is very hard to understand the cultures that enjoy living in a place filled and surrounded by trash. Especially in a developed country with all the necessities to keep it clean. It is sad because I do not want to see the nature to be further incapacitated by the things that can be easily changed on a personal note.

But the Italians seem to like it. They have beaches that the rest of the world can be envious of. However, most private beaches are being kept clean. The rest is treated as a massive public ashtray. Leaving plastic bags and cigaret stubs right on the beach.

And if you walk 10 meters towards the wild beach. You can even find washing machines, car parts and etc being thrown out in heaps. And the best part of all people sunbath surrounded by all the trash.

The country has beauty, unimaginable history, and friendly people. But skewed mindset towards the environment and the land they live on. We truly hope this post will reach some of them and will open their eyes to start the change. Even if it is only one person we will be happy.

With an ICE blue color and magical properties? Well, you are in luck I know just the place. Sorapis lake (Lago di Sorapis) is a hidden gem in Punta Sorapiss mountain which is located in the Italian Dolomites. It is a spectacular day hike with gorgeous views and I would call it as one of the most beautiful tracks in Northern Italy.

We have arrived to Cortina D’Ampezzo and stayed at international Camping Olympia for a few nights and the price wasn’t too bad – €21 per night for two people. The camping area is located in the Ampezzo Valley at an altitude of 1,283 m, surrounded by a river, lots of trees and Dolomites. A perfect place as a base camp. It takes around 5 km only to reach the center of Cortina. A little town that held the 1956 Winter Olympics and has served as the backdrop of a number of movies. No matter if you choose to sleep in the city or at the campground you’ll still have the most incredible views of mountain peaks all around you.

Since it was our first mountain hike ever we have decided to take it slowly thus we decided to take a cable car from Cortina to go up and start the journey from a higher note – Rifugio Faloria (2123 m). The time we traveled was at the beginning of September and it was the end of the season before all chalets close.

The view was instantly more and more scenic with every step we took. The track had a few areas with stairs and cables to hold onto to ensure you don’t fall and sometimes the ground was very slippery. But don’t let that to be a put-off. Since every adventure requires some challenge. Otherwise, the trip would not have any meaning to it.

Luckily, we used GPS for some time and finally saw a sign with a track number 216 – Lago de Sorapis. It took us around 3-4 hours (one way) to reach the lake in a leisurely mode.

However, words are one and picture is another thing. As they say, a picture says a hundred words.

Since on the weekends, it can be a little bit crowded.

The end of the great story.

Well not really. It was a special adventure. For one tiny thing – this time there were two of us!! We planned little, had no travel gear, and definitely took only the bare minimum of clothes. To be precise we took with us short and long pants, a warm jacket, sneakers, and a raincoat. The rest like tents, food and other necessities were bought in France (for cheap at Decathlon). Our one small request to the gods of the mountains was great weather and no injuries.

By the way, this was the first trip going camping on our own.

How it all started?

Simple on a whim for an adventure and excitement. Took us some time to plan it all since we did not want to spend a lot of money. In the end, we made it in more or less 350$ each the whole shebang – tickets, food, and lodging (we camped 99% of the trip).

To find cheap tickets from Lithuania to Lyon France we used Azuon. As you know everything is simple if you look from the right angle. However, there was a small problem. There were no tickets from Lithuania. Luckily we live “near” Warsaw Poland that usually has great offers. The only hassle is a 7h, 18$ (return) ride from Vilnius to Warsaw. But the trip is worth it since the flight back and forth cost only 45$. However, the best part was that we had the whole day to explore the capital of Poland. Slept in the botanical garden, relaxed in the city center. Listened to Chopin music across different installments at the Warsaw center and just hanged out with local sparrows.

The flight to Lyon was not long – a few hours max and little excitement to tell you about. Lyon airport was perfect since it was open 24/7. Perfect in the sense that we were able to sleep there and save around 100$ instead of going to town and sleeping in a hotel. AND! The bus to Mont Blanc was leaving from the Airport. So it was a Win-Win!

Sacrifice to the mountain

[Day 1] We did not go directly to Mont Blanc. First, we stopped at Annecy which has a beautiful tiny old town next to the Annecy lake. Were we had lunch in a local boulangerie and bought our camping necessities – tent, cooking equipment, and mattresses for sleeping.

From there we picked a ride using “Bla Bla Car” with a very nice lady who took us to buy some groceries and dropped us at the start of the trail – Les Houches!!

The time when we officially started the trail was around 15h. Right from the start, we have forgotten half of our bought food and leg shavers of my girlfriend near the trail while we repacked. We were too excited to start to notice that we left something behind.

The day was hot, Montblanc was in front and the heat was perfect. For me. Unbearable for my companion.

We should have known that the way you start the day it will always be so. We started the day with a steep hike up the mountain. After a few stops, lots of cursing and Arune being white from weight, heat and first-time mountain climbing we reached the pass. Where you could see an old train slowly going up. What a bummer it was…

Here at the first pass – Col de Voza 1680, we had a choice to continue going up or slowly go down and reach the sleeping spot from the other end. Which looked easier at that time. Taking into account that we had almost no sleep for 3 days and already reached a 1.7km height from 900m. It was the wrong decision. Because the original camping spot was never reached. We stopped near the pasture of cows and a newly built house that was vacant for tonight. Only Cows, two campers, and Mont Blanc. The only problem was the water! But since I knew that this house had to have a hose I went and silently, without leaving a mark searched and found it. Took a cold glacier water shower and poured enough water for us to boil our dinner. The first day ended being passed out happily in the tent somewhere in the bushes near the cows on the way to Col de Tricot.

[Day 2] The following days were a monotonous UH ahhhh uuuuu ahhh kinda days. With every turn a more scenic view then the previous at each walked meter up. At the same time, you could say it was the sounds of my partner going up. Since the fridge like weight were with us for the next three days.

A Japanese guy with a 26kg backpack… I could feel his pain! A Himalayan-style suspension bridge (1650 m) and a roaring glacial torrent which was a peaceful rest stop before we continued our hike as the way led us through a picturesque valley path up to one of the highest passes that day – Col du Tricot (2120m). My friend’s shoulders were hurting badly, but the smooth path, handful of blueberries and clear blue sky granted the energy to enjoy the journey to the fullest. Damn horses and sheep that tried to rip open our backpack steal food and for f sake ruined our guidebook, which the horse stole and wanted to trade for our food. It happened in the beautiful valley near Refuge de Miage 1550m, a spot which was the perfect lunch location near the mountain streams. We also crossed a beautiful alpine village Les Contamines, where we bought some fruits and ice cream in the supermarket and got a really pleasant walk through the nature parks.

There was a public WC and a water tap near the camping area as well. As so it happened once again we did not reach the intended sleeping location… 22 km on a second day was simply too hard for us.

The rainy day

[Day 3] The third day saw us climbing to one of the highest passes Col des Fours 2665. That day we passed actually two passes Croix du Bonhomme 2483 being the second one. Had a freaking thunderstorm that rushed in like crazy on us. Used the first time our raincoat (we used in total 2 times) got wet, frustrated but excited at the same time for the experience.

It stays at an altitude of 1864 meters, craved in the Valley of Glaciers, south of Mont Blanc. We had no doubt to stay there overnight, as there was a perfect place for a tent just across the river passed the hut, facing glaciers and Seigne mountain pass. Such places truly thrills a heart, with views that photos could never describe… I am lying my Girlfriend photography skills are way better than mine. So yes photos can describe it.

[Day 4] The next two days were the crazy ones. And the setting tone for the rest of the masochistic trail kinda trip. If not for the views I think we both would have cried the rest of the trip.

The day started by climbing to the pass of Col de la Seigne 2516m, getting down to the Italian side Val Veni. An amazing picturesque valley. It covers all the way from Col de Seigne to Courmayeur. This section of TMB is extremely beautiful. The landscape is different and the start of the trail hits the lake which is incredibly refreshing after a climb.

and then 4h hike down in a dusty shitty Italian road to the most beautiful alpine town Courmayeur on the track with its ancient old town, it’s narrow streets and luxurious villas was very tiring… Since the stupid shitty cable car was too expensive. I mean they cost the same amount as a Pizza … And you know that any hiker will rather eat pizza than take an easy ride down…. Oh oh and I forgot to tell you that we slept in a freaking parking lot (well nearby) illegally since in Italy camping is illegal but the rent for a room in a cheap old people home was 60 euro per person!!! Ridiculous. And of course, there were cascades nearby the parking lot so dead at the night I went and had a shower there. 32 km was done that day. I won’t lie the second day we did another 32 km and it wasn’t easy…

I think I forgot to mention every day we climbed at least twice up to a 2.3km high pass and down.

Italy 30h 64km

[Day 5] We spent only 1 day and a half in Italy until we passed another high pass – Grand Col Ferret 2537m and entered Switzerland. 32 km back to back in 30h not something I would suggest doing. The second part of the 64Km hike I would say easier compared to the first. I think for me personally the mountain pass between Italy and Swizz was the most beautiful… This stage of the track was bike-friendly, and we met lots of riders on the way. But a 2-day hike around 32km required a lot of power from us and we felt totally exhausted as we had our feet skin peeled and legs were hurting badly until we reached our first camping spot in La Fouly (Switzerland (1610m)). We found a big camping site almost in the dark, paid around 14 euro per person, took a hot shower twice, bought some snacks and enjoyed a little bit of civilization.

Hike

[Day 6] The next day in Switzerland we walked no more than 14 km since we needed a rest and also knowing that one of the highest crossings is awaiting us the next day. A hike from La Fouly to Champex had a modest height gain and was quite an easy stage of the route. We walked through Swiss mountain valleys and crossed a few small farming villages with no sign of modern touch. We reached Champex in the afternoon in the leisurely mood, did some grocery shopping, found a very nice camping site to stay overnight (paid around 13 euro per person), enjoyed hot showers, charged our electronic devices and stayed for a few hours near Champex lake dipping our hurting feets into the ice-cold lake water. By the way better not run out of food in the Swiss side. We spent 50$ on a very small amount of ration that lasted only for 2 days.

[Day7] Another day another pass to conquer – 2665m Fenetre d’Arpette and it took us only 5 hours. It was an interesting climb through gigantic rocks while hearing the sounds of cracking glaciers on the top which made us both feel uncomfortable, yet we denied the fear until we crossed the pass and felt safe to discuss it.

We started to descend and felt only loose gravel under the feet, which was quite a challenge for us as it was very complicated to keep the balance and not to injure our legs. It took us around 2 hours to go down to Chalet du Glacier du Buvette (1583 m). And just because we were not tired (or we were in our rush hour) we climbed back again to around 2113m height as we found a remote place to stay near Refuge Les Grands. The place is just magic as it is surrounded by mountains, meadows full of blueberries and two huge glaciers. Very few people come to stay there due to demanding climb up to 2133 meter height. BUT it was one of the most exciting places for me to stay overnight and not just because of the outstanding 5-star view from the outdoor toilet.

The Most Beautiful Place

[Day 8] The last two days that followed were both awesome, exhausting and very picturesque. At night while we slept a large number of runners that do UTMB ran near our tent… They did not let us sleep well and a restless night did not help us much. Since when morning came we needed to reach to Col de Balme 2191 m before we started to descend to Tres-Le-Champ village (1417m). Secondly, the legs were aching like crazy when climbing down, it was super hot, and once we reached our bottom point, we had to start climbing up to 2352 m almost right away. So that we would reach the most beautiful place before the sunset. We chose a more exciting trail that required us to use some crazy ladders that were etched in the mountain to reach the Lac Blanc the place with ice-cold water, most beautiful view of mont blanc and the best place for a campsite. Super expensive candies and super sweet Sprite renamed Lac Blanc Sprite.

Important note: on the way from Tres-la-Champ to Lac Blanc we didn’t see any freshwater springs to refill our canteens, which was very rare on TMB track. Everywhere else we didn’t have to worry about the water at all as every few hundred meters we could drink as much as we like and refill our water stocks whether it was a village or a valley…

The Last Hike

[Day 10] The rest of the trip as you probably guessed was getting down to Chamonix. Since we were already super slow zombie couple dreaming about ice cream and a hot shower, we decided to find a camping place and stayed there overnight with our fellow Mont Blanc snowy cap in front of our eyes for the last time.
P.s. Arune got her longtime dreamed ice cream from a random French guy as a cadeaux! Yes, she looked that tired!

[Day 11] As a friendly goodbye note, the sky got dark and we got rained on (the second time overall). We went to Saint Gervais Les Bains by train to sleep in our cozy Airbnb apartment, did some shopping in a local French market (Rhone-Alp cheese and nugga were fantastic!) and the next day we were ready to get a bus ride to the Lyon Airport.

On a final note, until you get out of the mountains you have to always be ready to climb some more even if you think the trail is over!!

When I started researching initially for a possible camping spots for the hike around Mont Blanc I have hit a wall. There were one or two mentions of possible spots and lots of vague posts about legality on camping while doing Tour Du Mont Blanc. Therefore, I have created this post about possible camping spot sites. Most of them are wild camping spots. Thus when you do your Tour Du Mont Blanc make sure that

When you wild camp, you put your tent in the late evening and pack up early morning to avoid any possible problems with hikers or law.

Leave the spot as you found.

Leave nothing behind. Even the toilet paper.

Also, I think I should mention the legality of wild camping. In short, it is a gray area. In France, it is ok to bivouac. Meaning to pitch a tent at night for one night. In Italy, I found that you can pitch a tent only if you are above 2500m. Otherwise, you might get a fine of 500 EUR if they catch you. But different blogs mention that bivouacking is fine. As for Switzerland, I am not sure. We camped at paid campsites instead of trying our luck with wild camping.

As for how this guide is built it is fairly simple. Starting at the Les Houches and going anti-clockwise. Here is a link to a Tour Du Mont Blanc map with all the campsites marked – Tour Du Mont Blanc Camping Site Map.

Tour Du Mont Blanc The French Camping Sites

Campsite 1. Unofficial campsite.

We just couldn’t hike anymore. A 9h bus ride, 10h hike in Warsaw and 4h flight to Lyon while sleeping a night in the Airport. So please do understand us – we were exhausted. This campsite was chosen by accident and not planned. We camped right outside the zone of the summer house.
The plus side of our campsite was a table to eat breakfast and dinner with a gorgeous view. Luckily the summer house was nearby and has an outdoor hose.

It is a flat ground right beside many streams from the glacier and with the magnificent view!

If you stop there you will be able to take a dip in the rive and wash your clothes.

Campsite 4 Official campsite.

It is a large flat area that used to be used as grazing grounds.

We did not go there but I believe there is a great place to sleep with a beautiful view.

Campsite 7. Unofficial campsite.

If the rain is forecasted I suggest moving up the mountain to not get flooded.

It all started with a wish to go somewhere really anywhere for holidays with a backpack and a tent. As all wishes to go anywhere turned to let’s not go there because of something something. Therefore it took us (me and my gf) more or less a month to decide where we wanted to go. Some places were too expensive just to get there, some places were too cold like Sweden and some places where a no because of reasons.

We had a few criteria for our holidays. Mountains, preferably a beach at the end of the trip, warm weather, good enough for beginners, cheap to fly and cheap to stay.
To find out the first few criteria we used the mighty Google, for the flights we looked into a little-known flight program for Europe Azuon and to sleep, well that was not a problem. We would be spending most of the time in a tent.

Using Azuon we found flights for 10 euros oneway and 40 euros back. It a very good program in my opinion (no affiliation with them)

In the end, we chose TMB. It has met all of our expectations but one. No beach. The best part was that we could do it all in 9 days perfect for our holidays period that we had.

So before we packed up and went on our short, gorgeous, fantastic and out of the world adventure we did a lot of reading. Like what to take, where to sleep, where to shop for food, and tracks to take.

For one there were no clear blog post/posts, or guides explaining these things. By reading most of them we got a picture that the amount of people trekking during the day is huge. However, it cannot be anything further from the truth. Besides small groups of elderly people in the morning and then a couple here or there most of the hikes we did alone. Take a note we went during the peak of the peaks. August – when the UTMB race goes through the mountains.

Secondly, there was no clear information about camping. Different sources say you cannot camp below 2500m. This is a law. However, no one mentions that bivouac is allowed. What is bivouac? If you pitch your tent around 19 pm and pack it up around 7 am it is legitimate. What you can’t do is make fire and leave a tent throughout the day. Just in case always try to find the place a little bit off the path.

Food – it depends on how posh you want to have your trip. If you do not mind paying per meal around 20 euros then you can eat in chalets (small guest houses in the mountains) if you want to have an authentic backpacking experience. Then around 2-3 days of food rations is a must.

So here are some of the tips we have compiled.

Weather – we were extremely lucky with the weather. It was most of the time 30 degrees in the valleys and around 20 in the mountains. Sunshine was upon us 8 days out of 9.⅕. A short thunderstorm that caught us at the crossing but about that later. And last day when mountains were sad that we were leaving we got a downpour. However, keep in mind 2 days later after we finished TMB all the peaks were covered in Snow. So you have to be prepared for such a possibility. We were not.

Water – do not be afraid that there is no water or you cannot drink the mountain stream. Sorry my American friends but this is just your fears talking:). There are streams going every 30 min or so almost in all of the trek so a 1-liter bottle was plenty enough. And in every city, there is a designated public drinking water place.

Shower – for me any cold stream at the end of the trip was a shower. For Arune it was too cold. Thus one was clean one was stinky. But in the mountains, you can’t smell it. Especially when you are going side by side. Yes, there were some crazy people who brought perfume to the mountains… But I guess to each its own.

Clothing – Here I can say only this. Pack once unpack and leave 30-40% of clothes and items out. Take just the essentials.

Map/Directions – You don’t really need those big bulky maps. You can use a (Tour of Mont Blanc Complete two-way trekking guide) for most of the trip of TMB. Unless you want to deviate and you have time then that’s when you need the big map. But if you are doing a TMB a simple guide and some common sense is more than enough. Think this way if there should be a marker where you are but it’s not most probably you need to take 10 more steps to see it. And follow the trails that looks like heavily walked.

Gear – we bought all of ours at Decathlon. Tent, Bags, mattresses and etc.

I think this post touches all the bases on what’s important when starting TMB. If there are any particular questions or things I forgot to mention it in the comments and I will edit the post.

Next post will cover the most beautiful places to camp on TMB.
